NURSERY OR PRIMARY SECTION - WHO WINS???

lol...! Now I know a lot of people are looking forward to this post 'cos this has been a hot topic among several educators.

While some have vowed never to teach any class above 5-6years olds, others have concluded teaching ages 0-5 is the worst punishment they can ever experience in this profession 🤣

So, in my last post titled "How it all started" , I mentioned that I was later moved to the Primary section in the very first school I taught. Now, in those days school leaders saw this act as a kind of promotion for their teachers. If you are performing up to expectation or exceeding their expectations, you'll be moved to a higher class, 🤓😃 funny right?

For those who were underperforming they were "demoted" to the Nursery section, OMG!!!🤣 Wow...What a yardstick! I'm thankful that the orientation of most school owners and leaders now is completely different.

Yes, I was moved to the Grade section on grounds that I was doing well and it was some kind of reward for a job well done but it was another learning curve for me as a "new comer" in the teaching profession. I learnt how to work with older children, enjoyed my time with them and felt more comfortable since they had some level of independence.

Truthfully, at that time I was so comfortable with the Primary section that I prayed not to go back to the Nursery section and I'm sure some teachers still pray that prayer till date 😄

Anyway, I relocated to another environment within Lagos at some point and the only available space was in preschool 😃😃 That was how I found myself back to working with preschoolers again. I hear someone say "answer your calling"😂🤣 This was actually a calling for me but I never knew. I had this big dream of probably teaching in a Secondary School or even becoming a lecturer in the University.

So, my journey of self discovery (career wise) took place from age 16 to 19years old when I gained admission to the University (UNILAG) to study Biology Education. I was already convinced that I was born to teach at this point in my life so I chose Biology Education as my First and Second Choice😂😂.

During my youth service I taught in a Secondary School and it was great! At least, so many of the my pupils and staff loved me and I gained recognition but I didn't get the satisfaction I desired. After my youth service in Owerri, I came back to Lagos and worked both in the Primary section and the Nursery in some schools. I've always been on the fence as regards which section suits me more. So you always hear me say things like, "I can fit into any class either Nursery or Primary Section"😂😂

💃Yaaay!!! Very recently I finally found my calling and I've embraced it with arms open wide. In the school where I teach presently, Divine Offspring International School; one of the best schools in Lagos state and please permit me to say in Nigeria👍😁 I was transferred to the Nursery section after spending over a session in the Primary.

Now, this part of my story is similar to Jonah and the big fish😂😃🤣 Seems as I try to run away from preschool, there is a force that pulls me back to my roots.

What amazes me is that after a very short period in the Preschool, I was made a Nursery Supervisor OMG!!!!😃 It's been fun and so much fun.

Now, I can boldly say that I have found my calling 🙏🔥🔥

My advice for other educators just like me is this, don't be rigid or too hard on yourself. Explore different opportunities, challenges and situations. Never say "NEVER" like some will say, ‘I will never teach any preschool class’. You "never" can tell where you'd find your calling and fulfillment.
